One stroke-saving shot a newer golfer should become skilled at is the knock-down or punch shot. The punch is a weapon that can be used in save situations when you want to advance to try to keep your score down. This is a shot that can be utilized to smack the ball out of rough spots and in windy conditions that are usually lethal to your score.

This swing can be used in a variety of situations but is mainly used when there are hazards you want to avoid overhead and below. The objective is to keep the ball at about 4 to 6 feet at the height of the trajectory. Use it to avoid tree branches, other golfers, bad lies, racoons – whatever hazards you may encounter in a real game that don’t show up at the driving range.

A good punch shot is a shot that has been practiced heavily by you, the user– know the distances that you can comfortably go by practicing regularly.

To start, I just bring the club 1/2 to 3/4 of the way back, and play the ball more in the back of my stance (maybe 3 inches further back than normal). Take more club than you think you might need in these shots, like 1 or 2 more. Hands ahead of the ball on the downstroke and connection. Think of it as the next step up from a chip/pitch shot.

To reiterate: take more club, choke it down, ball back of usual stance. Work through the swing keeping the lower body quiet as possible and flow through as low as possible. Don’t move the ball back as far when using a longer club – otherwise the result might look like a long putt. Practice your distance because you’d be surprised how far a half shot like this can send the ball.

Lastly: narrow your stance a bit, shift your weight to about 60-40 to your lead leg, make a 3/4 backswing never getting off front side, drive through the shot with quiet lower body, holding off the finish. The full swing in the punch shot is shorter than usual, and the arms stay closer to the body. Hitting down on the ball is a natural consequence of this shot type.

With so many brands and types of clubs not to mention of course the price, Buying golf clubs can feel like a daunting task. Here are some tips to making the process a little easier.

1. When you are buying a driver it is said that shorter is better,and closed is better than neutral. Many drivers are sold with shafts that are 45 inches or longer; the average driver on the PGA Tour is 44.5 inches. What you can learn from the pros is that they know  The longer the club, the harder it is to hit square. shorter is better especially with woods.  many golfers have a problem with slicing the ball which is caused by an open clubface at impact getting your driver fitted with a closed face angle should help that problem.
 

2. Consider making your 3-wood your club of choice off the tee. if you can hit your 3-wood as far or farther then your driver Then chances are that you don’t have enough loft on your driver. For most golfers 11 degrees of loft still is not enough, so why wouldnt you buy a 3-, 5-, 7-wood combination instead of purchasing a traditional driver which may not help your performance when you could put three clubs in the bag that will actually help you? Most golfers could drop up too five strokes with that simple change alone.

3. consider skipping out on  a 3-, 4- and maybe even a 5-iron in your next set. in past years manufacturers have been quitely lowering the loft on their irons so that they could say their clubs could hit farther. As a result, many 3- and 4-irons have such a little amount of loft that they are on the verge of being unhittable for the weekend golfer. a smarter solution is of course Hybrids. With that in mind…..

4. The real key to purchasing hybrids is to match them to the irons they are replacing. The idea with hybrids is to replace your long irons with a hybrid which will go the same distance as your irons would with an easier to hit design. Make sure to replace your long irons with hybrids that are the same length as well as loft just to make sure you are avoiding a distance gap.

5. Don’t get hybrids mixed up with fairway woods. They are to separate things. Hybrids are designed to be more of a replacement for irons, although there are hybrids that have the same loft and length as some fairway woods, . fairway woods are just as easy to hit as hybrids but instead of truley replacing a long iron you would just be adding another fairway wood to the bag so pay attention to what is a hybrid and what is a fairway wood.

a good tip to follow is If you sweep shots cleanly fairway woods are for you. If you have a steeper swing as in you tend to take a divot when you swing the golf club, you’ll be better off with a hybrid club.

6. There is not a one-size-fits-all golf club out there., you have to realize that Golfers come in all sizes and swing skills, If a club is too long for you or heavy, you will not hit a consistant golf shot and will ultimatley effect your game in a negative way. If you come across a bad lie angle the heel or toe will be up and will ultimatley lead to a shot that will be pushed or pulled no matter how perfect the swing is. 

7. When buying a wedge or wedges you need to think about the course you play the most or your “home” course. for example if the greens were small, fast and elevated You would need to play a club with plenty of loft. Do your bunkers have soft sand? Your sand wedge will need more bounce or a need a wider sole. lets say the turf is firm which causes  alot of tight lies. You would want a wedge with less bounce.

8. when looking at a putter you should pay attention to the ”three Ls”. if the three Lswhich are loft, length, lie angle are wrong, it wont matter who made the putter. You won’t putt well plain and simple. At impact, the sole should be parallel to the ground and the loft needs to be correct; this combination creates a true roll.

A putter with the wrong length and lie angle will cause you to either push or pull the putt. Too little or too much loft cause’s the ball to bounce of the club face and roll off-line.

9. The worse you play, the more you should get your equipment custom fitted.  Custom clubs aren’t just for low handicapped players and the pros.  The worse you play the more that you will  need clubs to match yourself as well as your swing. The game is difficult enough you don’t need to compound on that with the wrong equipment.

10. And of course the one consistant thing you will use throughout the round is your golf ball. Golf  Ball technology has improved so much over the years it is imperative you find the ball that is right for you. Ideally you would  want a ball that has low spin off the driver and high spin off a wedge. most golfers need to remember this, Extra yardage off the tee is far more beneficial than having more spin around the greens.
